Since we’re on the subject of Barrett Firearms rifles, we might as well also discuss the one-of-a-kind Robar NP3 nickel-Teflon-coated 30th Anniversary Edition Barrett M107A1 semi-auto .50 BMG anti-materiel rifle DefenseReview (DR) shot some photos and video of at SHOT Show 2012, real quick. The M107A1 is essentially a product-improved/re-engineered, lighter-yet-stronger version of the Barrett M82A1 that was specifically designed to be run suppressed.
The advantage of running the weapon suppressed are potentially four-fold: 1) It removes the bulk of the sound signature of the shot, except for those near the bullet’s flight path who will hear the sonic crack, 2) It will disguise the location of the shooter, even for those who can hear the sonic crack, 3) It significantly reduces or even eliminates the weapon’s flash signature, so as not to visually compromise the shooter’s location, and 4) It can potentially increase the weapon’s accuracy.
During a recent phone conversation with Cobb/Bushmaster MCR (Multi-Caliber Rifle) AR-format tactical rifle series designer/developer Skip Patel, he mentioned that he really likes the M107A1, and his opinion carries some weight, considering that he’s not only a gun designer/designer, but the one behind the very cool Cobb FA50(T) “Fast-Action” .50 BMG Anti-Materiel/Sniper Rifle, which DR T&E’d a few years back.
The 30th-Anniversary Edition M107A1 is nickel-Teflon coated inside and out, so all internal moving parts are coated, making the weapon self-lubricating/self-lubricitous. However, Defense Review would still recommend applying some gun lube to the weapon before an op.
DR is curious as to how Robar NP3 nickel-teflon stacks up to WMD Guns’ and FailZero’s nickel-boron coatings, as we’ve published information on the FailZero EXO coating in the past.
Standard-model Barrett M107A1 .50-caliber rifle features (taken directly from the Barrett Firearms website):

- Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) “rides on a hardened steel, anti-wear strip for added durability.”
- BCG’s components are protected with a mix of ultra-hard PVD coatings and advanced nickel-Teflon plating that increases lubricity, is corrosion-resistant and greatly eases cleaning.
- Thermal-guard cheek piece for extreme weather conditions (hot or cold)
- Rear-barrel stop and front-barrel bushing are bolted and bonded with a compound similar to that used on space shuttles.
- Titanium barrel key and fully chrome-lined bore and chamber add to the rifle’s durability.
